Next to the Government, we are the biggest provider of social services in the UK. The Salvation Army is a Christian church which seeks to put its faith into ACTION in the community. Daily we strive to care for the poor, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, love the unlovable and befriend the friendless. We work for everyone in need, regardless of their background or beliefs. Our work goes on in Wandsworth, every day, all year and around the clock.
THE ELDERLY: Many elderly people live very isolated lives. We run a Wednesday lunch club at which those living alone can find companionship and a hot nourishing meal.
FAMILIES: Families today are under so much pressure. We offer help to strengthen family bonds and offer practical support to families in crisis, including refuges for those fleeing domestic violence. We also make weekly visits to Wandsworth prison to connect between inmates and their family and relatives.
THE HOMELESS: Helping people who are living rough on the streets is an important part of our mission. By giving them soup, food, clothes and blankets, we help them to survive. By offering them shelter, we help them take the first steps toward making a new life with a job and a home of their own.
SELF RESPECT: When people are physically or mentally abused, or become hooked on alcohol or drugs, it is easy for them to lose all faith in themselves. But through the friendship we give them and the professional services we offer, we can often guide them into a better way of life.
